Eileen’s Lesson: Compromise is the Key to Success
This past week, my husband and I celebrated 35 years of marriage. Yay us!
In today’s world, that is an exceptionally long time. I’m often asked, “What’s the secret?” Well, I don’t think there’s a secret. There’s no one size fits all or formula, so much as an understanding of what is important, having realistic expectations, communicating those expectations regularly, and understanding that anything and everything can and will change, and it is all a compromise.
And just like marriage, there is no one size fits all approach to HR. However, we realize that we must always create realistic expectations for the people we work with, for, and manage. We need to communicate those expectations and let people regularly know where and when they are meeting or not meeting them. Recognize that people grow and change and determine how to help and encourage that growth.
More importantly, we must recognize that compromise is always the key to success. Everyone isn’t always right or wrong 100% of the time. We all have good and bad days. Managers and employees who are flexible and adaptable will be the ones celebrating milestones.
