In my pre HR life, I had a job that, due to carpooling, I arrived super early. As luck would have it, several co-workers also had the same situation.
As a result, we would get together in the kitchen and have coffee long before work started.
One day, someone brought out a Cosmo poll thinking it would be fun. Mind you, we were the only ones in the office, or so we thought. She proceeded to ask us questions. Do you…. A, B, C, or D. As we answered the first question, we suddenly heard someone say, “I would have picked C.” That voice was the CEO of our Fortune 1000 company, who then walked away just as quickly as he answered.
Understandably, the workplace rules were quite different 30+ years ago. We also had no idea if the CEO heard the question(s), but we took his response as a warning that a Cosmo poll might not be the best idea to do at work, even if it was 90 minutes before everyone else was expected to arrive.
Lesson learned, you never know who is listening.
At The HR Team, we’re great listeners. If you need HR help, give us a call.
