When my daughter was about 10 years old, she once said to me, “I haven’t gotten my allowance in a while.”
My response? “You haven’t done your chores in a while either. Do you think there is a connection?”
As managers, if our employees don’t do their work, we can’t simply not pay them. However, we do need to provide meaningful and timely feedback when they’re not doing their chores, aka work.
I shouldn’t have waited for my daughter to notice that she wasn’t getting her allowance, because I should have followed the guidelines outlined in this article about providing feedback.
